File Extension
A filename extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the encoding convention (file format) of its contents.
File Compatibility
Normally it refers to whether or not the file is compatible with
the program you want to open it with. For instance, .doc files
are normally associated with Microsoft Word. However, other
programs can open and read .doc files, because they're written
so that they're compatible with that file format.
