File Extension

A filename extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the encoding convention (file format) of its contents.

File Compatibility

Normally it refers to whether or not the file is compatible with 

the program you want to open it with. For instance, .doc files 

are normally associated with Microsoft Word. However, other 

programs can open and read .doc files, because they're written 

so that they're compatible with that file format.

Sidebar
